Artist’s statement

I paint and draw expressive mindscapes. Capturing and expanding on what you don’t see. Views depicting multiple perspectives in a single composition that stretch the eye and massage the mind. An exploration of how reality is a construct of the mind not the eye. Inviting the viewer to fill in the gaps and imagine places.

Visions that are not purely optical, but influenced by our memories, appetites and our senses of smell, touch and taste

Environments that move and change with light and depth inviting the viewer’s eyes to make connections. As an observer in the theatre of environmental change, I convey tranquility, drama and character through paint.

Biography

Kristian Bluff (b.1963) in Chiswick, London was introduced to painting by the English potter, Richard Godfrey, at Battisborough School in Devon. He was encouraged to keep a sketchbook and observe everything around him.

Inspired by artists, past and present, from the South West of England, (R.O. Lenkiewicz, Kurt Jackson, Newlyn School and St. Ives School) he studied at Plymouth College of Art (1981) and took a BA in Graphics (1985-89) at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation.

Lives and works in greater Copenhagen. First solo exhibition in 1986 at Mitzi gallery and continued to exhibit at corporate art associations and galleries in Copenhagen. His work has been sold to private collectors.

Paintings and drawings are done in situ and in the studio. “I want to stimulate the imagination. The viewer can fill in the gaps. Capturing light, tone, form and texture in a setting, drives my desire to create images of my surroundings.” His style evolves becoming bolder and expressive.
