Biography

Born on 1 July 1944 in Teplice-Šanov, Czechoslovakia to Artur and Dorilla (née Herrmann), Rolf Birkner grew up in Germany after his family became refugees in 1947 due to the Beneš decrees. He began exhibiting his work in the 1960s.

He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art (Kunstakademie Düsseldorf), becoming a professor there for a time.

He married twice, the latter being to fellow artist Beatrice (née Gorese) in 1986, they moved to Gidgegannup, Western Australia in 1990, becoming Australian citizens in 1993. Birkner held his last exhibitions in the 1990s.

He died on 10 July 2020 in a Nedlands hospital from a stroke. He had completed his last works earlier that year.

He has one daughter from his first marriage, and two sons with née Gorese.
