My vibrant landscape paintings are inspired by The Great American West, where I put myself in inspirational places that celebrate and embrace my Western heritage.

My subjects, the majestic mountains and plains of Colorado, usually select me as I’m hiking, searching for something that visually excites me. I’ll begin by taking many reference photos to capture the moment I want to visualize later in the studio. Back there, I continue by creating an interpretation of the scene, emotionally informed by light and color from my studies. Often, I utilize a series of ‘color roughs’ quickly sketched out with my paintbrush on drawing paper, to determine the best angles and color palettes for my painting.

While I have a driving desire to keep wild places wild, my work is all about sharing the fragile but untamed beauty of secret places that motivates the viewer to see and discover these wild places for themselves.

This scene from the Garden of the Gods always looks like a landscape from another planet to me, given the unique rock formations, spacing and recurring patterns. And when it is lit up on a warm fall afternoon, the colors can appear other-worldly, almost electric.

Biography

Carrie Martin is an American Landscape Painter based in Denver, Colorado. Her work centers around The Great American West, where she captures vibrant landscapes, big sky and the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains.

Born and raised in the city of Lubbock, Carrie began life in rural West Texas with a rich Western heritage, in the center of a vast farming and ranching region. It was in Colorado that Carrie formed a deep connection to the wild places of the American West, giving her a sense of freedom and connection to her surroundings, which continues to inspire her to this day.

Carrie studied painting at McMurry University in Abilene, TX before transferring to Texas Tech University to study Design Communication and Illustration. After college, she started working as an art director before opening her own design studio in Denver, where she worked with high-profile clients in Rocky Mountain West such as the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Rockies, the U.S. EPA Region 8 Denver Headquarters, and many more.

In her fascination for the wilderness of the American West, she also embraces environmental causes, including being an active advocate for the wild horses and burros that have lived and thrived on native rangeland for centuries.

Carrie Martin is an award-winning artist and has received accolades from a variety of American art organizations, such as the Tri Arts Project, where her painting “Heading to the Barn” helped raise $80,000.  It is now part of the Osborne Ranch collection, near Castle Rock, CO.

Her work has been exhibited in both commercial galleries and institutional museums throughout the country, e.g., Art Institute of Chicago, and can be found in public collections including the EPA Region 8 Headquarters, as well as in many private collections around the world. She is currently represented by Zatista Gallery.
