Carmen Lizardo was born in the Dominican Republic. She is a multidisciplinary artist combining experimental processes, printmaking, and drawing, using digital media, video, and non-silver photography as foundational tools. Her artwork explores themes of metamorphosis and hybridization. Through an autobiographical lens, she examines and acknowledges the histories and narratives of marginalized voices in societal discourses on belonging, with a particular focus on women of color.

Biography
Carmen Lizardo holds a BFA and an MFA from Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, New York). She has received fellowships and awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Academy of Arts and Letters, En Foco, Arts Mid-Hudson, Women's Studio Workshop, and the Sustainable Arts Foundation. Lizardo has exhibited nationally and abroad at the Museum of the African Diaspora (Brooklyn, New York), The Dorsky Museum (New Paltz, New York), Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at Alfred University (Alfred, New York), NARS Foundation (Brooklyn, New York), BRIC (Brooklyn, New York), and ArtsBridge (Governors Island), and La Casa de Cultura Dominicana (La Romana, Dominican Republic), and Fundacion Para el Arte y La Cultura, Biblioteca Virgilio Barco (Bogotá, Colombia). Her work has been published in Gum Printing: Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, and Contemporary Art Underground: MTA Arts & Design New York and has been featured in such media outlets as Hyperallergic. Most recently, she was commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit Authority to create a public artwork at the 181st Street Station in New York City. Lizardo is a former Department of Fine and Performing Arts professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
