Grahlmann's main focus lies formally and also thematically on uncertainty. She is fascinated by the relationship between the human need to feel assurance, orientation and belonging, while our world, on the other hand, is a world characterized by change, contradictions and unpredictable shifts. Her multi-layered paintings reflect this world: She is not interested in a purely naturalistic way of painting; instead, she creates paintings with overlapping realities and figurative and abstract elements, which allow the spectator to enter different fields of association. The process of painting is very often influenced by moments of chance and destruction. Mostly, people and nature around her inspire her work.

Quote
The longer you look at Anna Grahlmann's paintings, the more stories you see, the more associations arise. It's not unsettling, but her paintings give you the feeling that there is no final meaning, as everything overlaps: rooms, forms, layers of paint, truths.
